I interviewed Jungol at the Earl just prior to their performance the night of their CD release show for Over The Sun, And Under The Radar. By the time the second band was mid-set, the place was brimming with people from wall to wall, all eager to hear the talented trio’s new material. After reviewing their last album, Places, I already knew that between the hypnotizing vocals and skillful melodies their new album would be a smash among the crowd. These down to earth, laid back guys and I settled into the back of The Earl in a room covered with odd décor and sharpie messages on every wall. Josh, Jason, and Graham along with their manager, Lauren Wilson, shared their upcoming plans and their never ending quest to create.

DSC_4840

Your band used to be called Liquid Jungol. What preempted the change to Jungol?

Graham: I guess we had used it since high school and we pretty much just got tired of the name. Our music was kind of changing too and we just thought it was fitting to change to something new. We had thought of other names too that didn’t have anything to do with Jungol, but we wanted to keep with the old name somehow, and we just changed a letter. It really has no meaning; it just kind of looks cool.

Josh: It has an essence of our past because it’s similar. It’s pretty silly, but basically it has no meaning.

Graham: When the sound was changing we just felt like it was time for a change. It seemed right to do.

DSC_4848

Your 4th release is called “Over The Sun And Under The Radar”. Can fans expect the sound of Jungol they love, or did you try to branch into new territory?

Graham: I think the constant thing that we always have as a band and on every album is funk and having a groove of some sort underneath what we do, and that’s still there. It’s definitely different. There’s not as many ripping guitar solos, and it’s not as “notey”. Some of our other albums were more progressive maybe, and we were into weird time signatures and stretching songs out real long. On this one all the songs are shorter and more concise. I think the vocals are really important for us too, we’ve just been layering lots of harmonies, and we’ve been getting more into electronics.

Josh: It’s very different in that. Basically our EP Places had an electronic kind of feel at certain parts of it, but we didn’t really embrace it fully. So on the new CD instead of playing real bass on every song I play real bass on less than half. I play like synth and other things on it.
***Read the review of “Places” on www.RockFistReviews.com

Graham: We’re not like synth-pop and we don’t use electronic beats; it’s more about the textures what the synths bring. We use it more for texturing as opposed to making straight-up dance music.

DSC_4855

Where did you record the album and who helped produce it?

Jason: Rich ‘n’ Roll Studios in Alpharetta with Rich Grillo. We recorded Places and Tiny Heaven there.

So you have some history.

Jason: yeah, that’s been our go to guy for awhile. He’s very reasonable and very cool and he’s got really good equipment.

Josh: That’s what’s cool about it; we get to go to Rich’s place and just really get laid back and take our time. We essentially produce ourselves, pretty much. Justin Mullinix at Generator Sound Studios in Decatur is the guy that mixes everything we do and he has acted more like a producer on the new album and Places. We’ll be working a lot more with him in the future too.

DSC_4859

Have you guys already started talking about creating new material?

Graham: We already have a bunch of songs in the works. We always have tunes that we’re working on. We probably already have another album cooking.

Josh: It’s in the oven, or it’s about to be in the oven.

Jungol already has a CD Release Tour scheduled in May up and down the east coast. Do you have any plans to venture west this year?

Josh & Graham: Yes!

Jason: Definitely!

Graham: When we can afford it.

Josh: We’re not there yet. We’ve been out there once, and that was a couple of years ago. It was great, it was awesome. We had two shows in LA and played everywhere we wanted to play, but we just can’t do it yet. It’s expensive. But we go up to New York a lot. We’ve been there like six times.

Jason: We do want to be able to tour all over the world one day; Japan, Australia, everywhere we get the opportunity to do it.

DSC_4840

Have you sought out management?

Graham: Lauren Wilson, and she’s been working with us for… well we talked about it for a long time. It’s been in the works for over a year.

Lauren Wilson: Officially April 1st they signed to Local Evolution of the World Entertainment. Which will be focused on marketing, management, and promotion. And their brain child is my brain child. You can find my website within the next month at www.localevolotionoftheworld.com.

Graham: We have a publicist too. She’s awesome, Liz Lawson. She’s from Atlanta and she’s great.

DSC_4861

Josh and Graham, you’re both brothers. Does that ever create challenges in writing music or touring? Jason feel free to answer as well.

Josh: The great thing is we’re always searching out new music. We keep each other from really being stagnant. It’s just been a process our whole lives I guess. Writing and creating and we’ve always been creating something since we were really little. We’re always doing stuff and it still works for us at 27. It hasn’t gotten in the way of that. But touring, I think we get along pretty well.

Graham: We get along pretty well. I mean there is the brother fights. We’re twins so we’re extra f*d up.

DSC_4863

What’s an average day on tour like?

Jason: Driving.

Josh: Looking for coffee shops.

Jason: Making sure we’re on time for load in. And if we can, if we have time, wherever we’re at we’ll go check out the scene, hang out with people.

Graham: Get some good food.

Jungol will be performing at two festivals this summer in Atlanta: No Fest at Eyedrum on July 24th and The Strange Daze Music & Arts Festival on August 14th. Can you tell us a little about these shows?

Lauren Wilson: Strange Daze is a serious collective of bands in Atlanta and the southeastern regional acts. It really spands all different genres. Nadia Lelutiu With The Moon & Pluto has really done an amazing job of tapping into the newest, and in my opinion the best, of the southeast and Georgia’s different genres. It’s really a great festival.

Josh: And we’re going on at 11pm on the last day.

DSC_4867

What bands do you hope to get the opportunity to perform with some day?

Graham: Bjork.

Josh: Bjork. If Mars Volta ever had an opening band, but they never will. They don’t do that.

If you could give any advice to other aspiring artists, what would it be?

Jason: Don’t take shit from anybody.

Graham: I would say just keep searching out and experimenting and just keep loving playing music. That’s the main thing that keeps like…

Josh: That keeps a good band going. I think bands that always keep going are bands that just love the process of it.

DSC_4873

Graham: And bands that dig the whole business process too. To be a good band you really have to dig in and uh..

Jason: Get dirty in the whole thing.

Graham: But you have to enjoy it to some extent.

Jason: Don’t give up.

Josh: Don’t give up.

Graham: Don’t give up. Never give up.

These Savannah locals have been performing their roots-reggae meets contemporary rock tunes to an ever growing fan base since 2003. Although the majority of their fans are located in the Southeast, their tour to the west coast this summer is sure to introduce them to a whole new audience. With music that reads into the soul, and calms the spirit, the entrancing musical collection of “Everyone On Everynight” appeals to the Rasta in us all. Their third album reflects mellow melodies combined with an array of influences creating their own spin on reggae. The album opens with “Casting Of The Cares” a catchy song that highlights keys that pop along with the bass during the verse and a heavier chorus with a deep guitar and catchy lyrics. Paired with the smooth vocals and a crying guitar solo, this song is a great introduction to the rest of the album. “Keeping In Touch” is a chill, solemn track with a psychedelic ambience. Vocals remain strong, but are softened for a more relaxed feel as they sing poetic lyrics that seem to hypnotize the listener. The simple delivery makes a big impact. “Illuminate” opens with a heavier sound that leads into an electronica vibe where the bass and drums are distinctive. This song proves they can think outside the box and branch off while staying true to the core of their music. “Here In Front Of Me” has more of a pop influence that could introduce them to more of a mainstream audience, and although born in a somber setting, lyrics are sweet, poetic, and hopeful. “Carouser” features loads of bass and a squealing guitar leading into a jam session with spacey rifts, relaxed vocals, and a finale of drum rolls paired with a surge of guitar. The album is now available from iTunes, Amazon, and CD Baby. Passafire’s talent is demonstrated on “Everyone On Everynight” and is also guaranteed to be found at one of their live performances.

Review of The First Stone’s “Quarter to Never” Album
~ Kris Melton

Sample if you like: Ben Harper, John Mayer, Dave Matthew’s Band
Location: Atlanta, GA

 The First Stone

The First Stone’s “Quarter to Never” is a rustic, easy going album with traces of soul and storytelling as its core. Lyrics tend to be poetic and tender paired with beautiful melodies and catchy choruses. The instruments never over power each other, but play off each other. The bass shines out in their songs, the guitars capture the mood, and additions like a piano bring a simplistic beauty to their melodies. “Are You With Me” is fairly simple with deep, dramatic vocals. “Close To Nothing” has more of an alternative influence and a bitter undertone. “Hideaway” adds a bit of funk to the mix with clever love lyrics like, “I’d like to make you the queen of my afternoon”. “The First Stone” combines soul and pop creating playful rifts. The guitar solo has a good tone and is creatively in synch with the rest of the song. “With A Little Luck” features an acoustic guitar and piano creating a humble and sweet love song. “This Time” changes gears into a more sexually charged song with fun change-ups. The band’s personal favorite is “What About You”. The melancholy piano and tormented vocals make this song deeper and more contemplative compared to others on the album. If lyrics with depth, funky bass lines, and unique guitar riffs sound right up your ally, check out The First Stone’s debut album. Their single “Walking Away” is available for download now from the band’s Myspace page.

Review of Chris Unck & The Black Roses’ “Ridiculous! Ridiculous!” Album
~ Kris Melton

Sample if you like: The Beatles, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, The White Stripes

Label: Lower 40 Records
Location: Atlanta, GA

Chris Unck 2

Chris Unck’s latest project “Ridiculous! Ridiculous!” is far from the typical sound generated in the Southern Rock music scene. Music combines classic rock flavor with indie, country, and a pinch of pop. The album features singer/ songwriter and musician extraordinaire Chris Unck mainly on an acoustic guitar, with instruments such as piano, harmonica, and even a ukulele to compliment. The album was released on iTunes August 18th, and a music video for “Turning Knives Into Steam” is available as well (see RFR’s Video’s column).

The album starts strong with “Ruby with Them Eyes” which has a country/ folk feel and a bounce that makes your feet tap. The edgy lyrics, defining piano, and harmonica really make the song both likeable and memorable. “My Bonnie Young Lass” has a bluesy sound with a piano that sounds straight out of a saloon. “Little Hummingbird” is slow and sweet with lyrics that can be described as poetry in motion. “Durty Kuntry Girls” is a mix of country, pop, and soul. The chorus is playful and induces singing along, clapping, foot tapping, or all three. “Love Is Not A Jinx” has a unique indie sound that is light and thoughtful. “Rosalina” switches things up a bit. You can really hear the pain behind his voice making this broken-hearted song both personal and relatable. “Tear Me Down Pt. 1” is soft and delicate. Lyrics like “love is a song, sung best in the rain”, the accenting guitar with a country flare, and the piano create a depressed, yet beautiful song. The song chosen for a music video, “Turning Knives Into Steam” is a delightful addition, and quite possibly the best off the album. The melody is extremely catchy, the lyrics are relatable, and the sweet easy-going flow really makes it jump out at the listener.

Chris Unck_Ridiculous

“Ridiculous! Ridiculous!” is a 13-track masterpiece and a one-of-a-kind addition to your music collection. The only thing better than listening to the album, is catching Chris Unck and The Black Roses live. Keep an eye on the band’s Myspace page (listed below) for future dates in your area. Review of Chris Unck’s “Turning Knives Into Steam” Music Video
~ Kris Melton

Director/ Producer: Tim Daust (Reelmind Studios)
Label: Lower 40 Records
Location: Atlanta, GA

Music videos can be very expensive. This is especially true for local bands that already have enough financial woes to worry about, like merch and gas to get to shows. However, Reel Mind Studios proves that you don’t need to roll out the high dollars to get good film quality and a video you can take pride in. Director and producer, Tim Daust, managed to capture the essence of who Chris Unck is and of the song’s meaning. The clips on the street and in the tattoo parlor give it a rustic, indie vibe that the everyday Joe can relate to, which also meshes well with the lyrics. As the video opens, we see Chris getting tattooed at local Atlanta parlor, 13 Roses Tattoos. Throughout the duration of the song we see him walking through the East Atlanta bar district and Krog Street, where local graffetti makes for excellent back drops. Joined by a blonde beauty, we see simple romantic interactions from teasing to walking side by side illustrating a connection and connecting with viewers as well. The video is simple and thus accents the song.

This has been one of the strangest reviews for me to do. It starts out when I hear this band just ripping it at a show in Duluth GA. I think they were on a bill with the Black Headz. I was digging this opening band and I had to find out more about them. So I went and checked out when they would be playing, and set up a time to do a live show review. This was originally supposed to be done back on 7-3-09. Rock and roll can do some strange things to a band. For some reasons unknown, the bass player didn’t show up, and they had a relatively new guitar player. The “band” decided to try and hash it out, since people had come out to see them. We will just say it didn’t turn out so well on that night. I truly dug the music so much; I wrote the band and said I wanted to come out again if they had it back on track for a future show at Smith’s Olde Bar. We agreed to this future show review. In my opinion all of Super Hooligan’s chips would be riding on it as a band. Forward one month and one day exactly and I’m standing right by the sound board in my favorite venue, of its size, Smith’s Olde Bar. I started thinking about how many great bands I had heard in that room. I had great expectations that this night would be a good show. As the sound guy is running through the mic checks and running from back of house sound to front of house sound, I knew what I was in for. This was going to be some loud rock and roll!

 SuperHooligan

People: May I say good, old fashion, loud, rock & roll is living and still well. “Hey you, come get some”! What a perfect way to start of a show. The song “Get Some” had me saying this is what I need right now. I felt like po-going around and kicking the air. Tino Martino, is punk rock solid. This is very apparent throughout his eclectic array of rock and roll drumming. A little bit later in the show, they ripped into a song called “Space Girl”. I was feeling the new bassist from this point on; this girl (yes a lady) laying down the low end like it should be done. Allison Shockley is a new addition after the previous show’s let down. She is amazing! To step up and know the songs in that short of a time period was God given. One of the original reasons I liked Super Hooligan was because of the previous bass player, but she was hitting it… I could tell she was in a groove at this point, as she must have gotten more comfortable in her new band. Lee, guitar player/vox/songwriter, started to sound a bit like a crosses between Jim Morrison, Glen Danzig and Steven Morrissey. I think it was after that song when Lee asked the crowd “Is it loud enough yet?” I thought to myself how I could answer that question… Rock can always be just a bit louder! I should also mention Jimmy Demer truly adds to this band. It is very apparent in the song “Peace Maker”. Super Hooligan is a guitar band and the guitar arrangements in this song are pure classic rock. I knew right then, that this band is a punk rock, classic band. “Little Sister” is my favorite song that they do! It’s a guitar song and a dig the soul riff. I think this song was also Lee’s best singing wise of the night. The show ended with what I think every band should do. They played a super familiar song for the crowd. “20th Century Boy”, had people dancing and rocking out. You all have to get that it wasn’t done the same old way we have heard over. We all love that T Rex classic, but it truly shows when a band can put their style to a known song. I wanted to dance to one of my favorite songs of all time.

Super Hooligan is a plainly a good rock band. It comes down to them just playing more shows as a band. I can see them going on without much more stumbling. I would hope that no one is offended by me saying Allison Shockley has a nice half sleeve. I dig her bass playing; by the next show I bet a beast will come out. Atlanta has something steam rolling at it and we can’t get out of the way. I am confident Super Hooligan is headed for future success.

Review of Blair Crimmins & the Hooker’s EP “Meet the Hookers”

I am dumbfounded after hearing Blair Crimmins’ EP, given to me by the editor of RFR. You have to understand that I was handed a small stack of disks to peruse. I went home and flipped through the stack and was drawn to an E.P entitled “Meet the Hookers” by Blair Crimmins and the Hookers. It sounded incredible, and I couldn’t wait to listen to the entire disk. The next day I was eating breakfast with a good friend of mine and he says, “You got to hear this guy Blair Crimmins”. I think you all may see the pattern going on here. It turns out a friend of his, and an acquaintance of mine, recorded the EP. I run home and sure enough the disk says it’s mixed and recorded by Chris Unck; who’s music I also like. I can’t believe what I have heard several times now. This man has taken me back to the first conceptions of rocking and rolling. A time when jazz crazy people of the 30’s swung into a big band room. I’m talking about early stuff like Count Basie, Etta James, and early Ray Charles; into later music such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, or Elton John.

When listening to the first song, “March of the Hookers” I was blown away by the piano and the swing beat drums. I just love an off-timey beat, with big symbol crashes, and a hard bass drum kick. I just pictured a big band room with mobsters sitting around enjoying Duke Ellington. I almost thought I was in a movie. The EP keeps pace with the song. The vocals are incredible! That also equals a good record; I mean this kid has pipes. I almost think he could sing in a serious theatre production if he wanted to. I love his little ukulele and slide guitar love song, “Without You”. I am reminded of a nice beach front hideaway, and fifties surf. Without giving the entire record away, it later takes us to a song that sounds like he uses wash boards and a string bass to make. You ask, how good can that sound on record? All I can say is total brilliance and creativity. It’s like an old New Orleans marching band coming down the street, with the jazz horns and eurhythmic hand clapping. He finishes the EP on the song I think is his best vocal performance. He hits tones I didn’t he think he had. I stand corrected! This guy has something to say and he does it with some soul. It sounds like it’s poured out all over “Long Walk Home”.

All I can say is go see this show. I can’t wait for my first Blair Crimmins show. I want to figure out who plays with him. I want to know everything about this band. How do they pull this off live? The record sounds so good I visualize the music and different scenes sung out in perfect tone. I’m sure it all fits together live. I hope I’m right on with the feeling and attitude I get from this E.P., because I’d like to ask these questions in an interview.
