5Since creating Rock Fist Reviews, and collecting more ink, I’ve been the proud face of the company. In an entertainment scene dominated by men, I take pleasure in the respect I’ve gained from my peers, as well as the shock value when bands realize Kris is a girl. Shocker! Seriously, it makes me smile, but lets me know I’m on the right track. Here at RFR we have some exciting new things that will be hitting the site in the future, and now more than ever we want to get a buzz around our name, who we are, and what we do.

I was lucky to have our promotional photos taken by Brent Walker of Lucky Pin Up yesterday, in a shoot that was both sexy and comical. While he usually does Pin Up style shoots, he’s also expanding his expertise to other avenues and helped me come up with some edgy shots. Having been a major Tom-boy when I was younger and coming from a family with six brothers, I’m not exactly used to being a life size Barbie doll. However, I highly recommend that every girl gets this experience at least once. I started off feeling extremely awkward and self conscience. But between Brent, who made me feel completely at ease and offered great direction, and Brittany Palermo-Heaney, who joined us as my stylist and did a fabulous job, I think the shoot turned out great. I can’t wait to share my pictures with all you fellow rock fisters! Joan Jett eat your heart out, there’s a new bad ass in town…er, something like that.

As far as the future of Rock Fist, we will share more when we can and hope you continue to enjoy our site in the mean time. Be the first to know when we add new posts by subscribing to our email updates. You can find out more information about Brent and Lucky Pin Up by going to our Other Artists column under Photography, and we will have information on Brittany and her services soon.

Review of Pour Habit’s “Suiticide” Album

Record Label: Fat Wreck Chords

Some bands naturally have that “it” factor; that extra something special that sets them apart from their peers. Pour Habit has “it”, and their album “Suiticide” is sure to impress and catch on with those exposed to their aggressively catchy tracks. The band has signed on with Fat Wreck Chords and has been touring nationally with bands like Strung Out, so exposure and thus success are well within their grasp. This high-energy punk meets metal group has put together an album that’s gratifying from start to finish. Vocals are high pitched paired with comprehensible lyrics that are reminiscent of Dexter Holland of Offspring. “Institution” kicks off the album full force with drums and guitars that rip, combining punk and metal for an explosive opener to the album. “Against Me” is full of robust flavor packed into just under two minutes. Intense drums open and the melodically heavy guitars instantly grab the listener’s attention with catchy choruses and a mesmerizing bridge. “Misfigured” addresses the band’s diversity with a pronounced bass and chants leading into the chorus. “Bad Luck Drunk” is the band’s anthem to drinking which is sure to inspire mosh pits and debauchery. “Evolution” delivers another hard hitting song with a great hook. If having a bad day, one should turn the volume up and scream along to this track; the chorus’ lyrics seem like they were created for that very purpose. “Zion” adds reggae to the mix, which serves as a teaser into the rest of the song. You can really hear how strong the vocals are, as well as the talented guitar shredding. The title track, “Suiticide” evolves throughout the duration of the song. Instruments are solid and serve up a great delivery. Possibly the best song off the album is “Resignation”, which is sure to encourage head banging, rock fisting, and the like. Lyrics like “Liars, fakers, money makers” in its chorus make this memorable track an instant favorite. Pour habit continues touring again in January, and you can find all of their upcoming show information on their web pages listed below. Their album “Suiticide” is available for purchase now.

Recently Bruce has been co-producing, engineering, mixing, and bass-ing on new material with James Hall, and he just finished recording and mixing a new The Lord Is My Shotgun album, (out now, check their page)! Mike and Bruce also split the engineering duties a few months ago when Atlanta metal heroes/ Grammy-nominated MASTODON were in the studio to track a cover song for a nationally-televised video game advertisement….. Look for the EA video games TV commercial for the new game “ARMY OF TWO”! (on television or on YouTube) Mastodon also did extensive pre-production and preliminary recording for their just-released new album with us, and the studio will be featured on their upcoming “making-of the new album” DVD!

We also have several high-caliber local Atlanta session players on-call (at additional cost) who are very skilled, work fast, and are well-versed in a variety of styles. So if you’re a solo artist, singer/songwriter, or even a band that’s currently minus a member or two. Don’t worry! Not a problem! We can STILL help you complete a GREAT sounding recording!l_a87681c0336441e9a1d69f19b9fff1cd

We also do a lot of “e-sessions”. If you have already recorded guitars, vocals, etc. for your songs, but need some huge-sounding drum tracks, bass tracks, etc., just send us the session files on hard drive or DVD, and we can track great-sounding drums/bass/whatever to it without you even having to be present!

We have our own in-house guitar, bass, and drum technicians who are available (at additional cost) to intonate, tune, set-up, or repair your guitar, repair your amp, repair and tune drums… anything to help you create the best possible sounds for your recording!

We are flexible and probably can find a way to work within almost any budget and any schedule.

Examples of our work can be found on our Myspace page player, or featured on the web pages of most of our clients.

To discuss your next recording project with us, contact us on Myspace, Facebook, send an e-mail to: mikemover@mindspring.com  or call Mike or Bruce (contact info listed above).

Halloween means something different to everyone. Some celebrate the opportunity to wear costumes from the unique to the super slutty (it’s a female’s right this one day of the year). Some celebrate the awesome excuse to party for 2 weeks straight (drinking and debauchery are a package deal). For us here at Rock Fist Reviews it means local shows, local shows, and more local shows! There was a ton of options last weekend, and hopefully everyone took advantage! We’d like to hear about your experiences (the good, the bad, and the ugly). The stories we like we’ll post on the site for others to read, and hopefully introduce some new bands to our fans. If you include pictures, well… that’s just even more kick ass!

So with that in mind, where was I on Halloween you may ask. The answer: Uptown Loft with The Bastard Suns and The Blacksmithz. Both bands rocked the fairly new venue which was packed with drunkards, zombies, slutastic woman, and Waldos- seriously, there were two of them! I took full advantage of the woman rule on this festive occasion, and although the fear of bending just a tid bit too far over and exploiting my rear was in the forefront of my mind, I must say it was fun to step out of character for the night. Some awesome costumes of the evening included: A Saved By The Bell Group (Kelly, Jesse, and AC Slater), Magnum PI, Jax from Sons of Anarchy, Slash, Peggy Bundy, and Cherry from Planet Terror.

With turkey day and Santa’s reindeer coming soon, we hope you still continue to rock out at shows and support the local music scene. Hopefully the onslaught of horrific holiday albums and songs overwhelming shopping arenas of all kinds will give you the push you need to drop $5 on covers to local shows. That is… if your eardrums don’t burst first.

Review of The First Stone’s “Quarter to Never” Album
~ Kris Melton

Sample if you like: Ben Harper, John Mayer, Dave Matthew’s Band
Location: Atlanta, GA

 The First Stone

The First Stone’s “Quarter to Never” is a rustic, easy going album with traces of soul and storytelling as its core. Lyrics tend to be poetic and tender paired with beautiful melodies and catchy choruses. The instruments never over power each other, but play off each other. The bass shines out in their songs, the guitars capture the mood, and additions like a piano bring a simplistic beauty to their melodies. “Are You With Me” is fairly simple with deep, dramatic vocals. “Close To Nothing” has more of an alternative influence and a bitter undertone. “Hideaway” adds a bit of funk to the mix with clever love lyrics like, “I’d like to make you the queen of my afternoon”. “The First Stone” combines soul and pop creating playful rifts. The guitar solo has a good tone and is creatively in synch with the rest of the song. “With A Little Luck” features an acoustic guitar and piano creating a humble and sweet love song. “This Time” changes gears into a more sexually charged song with fun change-ups. The band’s personal favorite is “What About You”. The melancholy piano and tormented vocals make this song deeper and more contemplative compared to others on the album. If lyrics with depth, funky bass lines, and unique guitar riffs sound right up your ally, check out The First Stone’s debut album. Their single “Walking Away” is available for download now from the band’s Myspace page.
